Oil flax is primarily grown for its oil yielding seeds. In the Netherlands, yields are generally between 2500 –3000 kg/ha. The crop can be grown in very extensive systems and harvested using combines.
Oil flax contains approximately 40% oil (fiber flax seed 25%). This oil contains six types of oil but is typically known for its extremely high percentage of unsaturated fatty acids (>60%), also known as omega-3 oil. Omega-3 is very health beneficial and is widely used in the food industry (dressings, margarine), in medication, animal feeds, and in the non-food sector as a component of linoleum, flooring and paint for example.
The core business of van de Bilt seeds and flax bv is breeding new varieties for oil flax cultivation. These varieties are recognized as leading in the sector and are cultivated globally.
The following traits are taken into account when breeding oil flax seed:
- seed yield
- harvestability
- lodging resistance
